How do you feel when you read the title above, gross?! euwee! no ! I don’t want to touch that ! You may believe this or not but this kind of coffee really does exist, infact it’s the world’s most expensive and low production coffee. It called ‘kopi luwak’ from its original languange ‘Bahasa Indonesia’ means civet coffee. Civet coffee is a coffee using coffee beans which have been eaten by the Asian palm Civet (Paradoxurus hermaphroditus), then passed through its digestive tract and came out along with civet’s feses. If you are less bitterness tasted coffee lover then you are going to love this kind of coffee.
The coffee beans which passing through civet’s intestines, are being defecated so the shape is not deformed. Do you think the coffee beans are somewhat just crushed then boiled with water to get good coffee after they came along with civet’s feses ?! of course, not. These coffee beans are processed just like the other coffee beans, they are washed, sun dryed, light roasted and also brewed. The process that these coffee beans went through in civet’s stomach made them taste wonderful. It’s because the beans seeped by the proteolytic enzymes in civet’s stomach, the peptides became shorter with more free amino acids, that is why the taste became less bitterness.

Its original produced region are from the islands of Sumatra, Java, Bali and Sulawesi at Indonesian archipelago, but it’s already well known throughout the american world since its appeared on Oprah Winfrey show. There are some controversial events happened regarding to this unique kind of coffee. Ever said to be forbidden for the moslem to consumed, which are most of Indonesian citizen hold belief, because its process that went through animal digestive tracks and came along with its feses. How ironic that this statement was stated, the original producer couldn’t enjoy their most valuable production that they found since the 18th centuries. But this ridiculous statement had finally denied, MUI, the highest moslem institution made clear that the coffee beans of this kopi luwak which are not merely animal’s feses, are fairly okay to be consumed.
This kopi luwak also called dung diplomacy by the australian government when Indonesian president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono made this coffee as a gift for Australian Minister Kevin Rudd. Its way that so ‘smooth’ without passing the airport investigation made the australian government had to hold this kopi luwak in custody.
